Research Centre for Cardiovascular diseases

Today, there is no doubt that the world has increasingly become urban and the 20th century witnessed rapid and unprecedented urbanization of the world's population The global urban population increased from 13% in 1900 to 29% in 1950, 49% in 2005 and it is estimated that by 2030, 60% of the population will live in the cities. Although there are many benefits of urbanization, but it poses a challenge to the public health.

India is a fast developing country with rapid urbanization and our people are the main workforce who will progressively move our country forward as per the vision of our Governments. At the same pace of urbanization the incidence of life style disorders like Hypertension, Diabetes, Obesity, Cholesterol disorders, Heart diseases & stroke is increasing and leading to unexpected morbidity & mortality of the public.

Our impact

Cardiovascular diseases remains the leading cause of death worldwide despite tremendous success in new therapeutics and technologies in recent decades.

One reason for this is because we do not fully understand diseases progression and side effects of interventions. Many drugs and medical devices that look promising during development, however, do not show efficacy in the clinic. Drugs fail to reduce diseases burden. Medical devices cause complications such as blood clotting (thrombosis) and require patients to receive blood thinning drugs as mitigation. This failure is largely to do with the fact that many model systems we use to evaluate drugs and devices in the laboratory do not adequately replicate clinical conditions.
